What is a Cherished Number Plate?

At TopReg we believe all types of number plates should be cherished. But that doesn’t mean every plate is a cherished number plate.

In the registration plate industry, cherished number plates lovingly refer to dateless registration marks issued before 1963. Distinctive among the countless modern number plates we see on the roads, these vintage plates remain extremely popular with petrolheads across the UK.

TopReg is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of cherished number plates. Explore our wide range of older and cherished registration numbers for sale on our website today!

The History of Cherished Number Plates

Long ago, before the modern system of year suffixes and prefixes, British car registrations were issued without an obvious date. This earned them the nickname ‘dateless’ registrations, but today we call them “cherished”.

Each region had its own unique code (like A, or AA), and was followed by a series of numbers that kept track of registrations. These plates were simple, elegant, and a testament to the early days of car ownership.

Unfortunately for those passionate about cherished plates, as cars became more popular a new system was implemented. These are the plates we’re most familiar with today.

Cherished Number Plates Today

Today, these vintage-style cherished plates are highly sought after by collectors. In particular, they are extremely popular with classic car owners. Many of these owners seek out period-correct number plates to complete their vintage vehicle’s character and identity. To them, it would be a complete blasphemy to have a modern plate on a classic 1960s Jaguar E-Type.

While many cherished plates have been lost to time, those still being used are a distinctive piece of motoring history, and here at TopReg we cherish selling them to motor enthusiasts across the UK.

Cherished Number Plate FAQs

  • Can you put a cherished plate on any car?

Generally, you can put cherished registration numbers on any car. There are no rules surrounding these plates specifically that prohibit motorists from putting them on their cars.

However, there are a couple of important exceptions that apply to all registration plates to be aware of before you purchase a cherished plate.

    1. The DVLA’s rules state that it’s illegal to put a registration on a car to make it appear newer than it is. Therefore, you cannot put a cherished number plate on a car if it could lead someone to believe the car is newer than it is. For example, if your car was registered in 2005, you can’t get a registration plate with any age-identifying numbers from 06 onwards. For more information on this, check out our Guide to Vehicle Registration Years in the UK.
    2. As with all personalised registrations, cherished number plates cannot be used on Q-registered vehicles and other vehicles that do not require an annual MOT test or HGV (heavy goods vehicle) certificate. For example, tractors and steamrollers.

Apart from these exceptions, cherished plates can be put on any type of car, new or old.

  • Are cherished number plates a good investment?

Cherished number plates (as well as other types of personalised plates) can be a rewarding investment. Unlike the vehicle itself, which typically depreciates, these classic plates tend to rise in value over time.

Dateless number plates with very few digits, such as ‘M 1’, are particularly valuable thanks to their unique and eye-catching nature in comparison to today’s more common 7-digit plates.

If your primary goal is investment, consider choosing plates with broad appeal, such as those featuring popular names and numbers like ‘JAM 35’ or ‘DAV 3.’ These combinations tend to have enduring value and remain relevant to a wider audience. Steer clear of characters and numbers that only have significant meaning to you.

A quick word of caution — investing in number plates, like any investment, carries inherent risks. Prices can fluctuate, and in certain cases, you may experience a loss on your investment.

  • How do we transfer a cherished number plate?

Transferring your new cherished number plate onto your car doesn’t need to be a hassle. The process is relatively straightforward — there are four main requirements your vehicle must have:

    • An MOT
    • It must be operable
    • You must have proof of tax
    • It needs to be available for inspection.

Assigning the cherished number plate to your car can then be completed quickly and easily online. You’ll just need the certificate of entitlement or retention with the registration number on it and your car’s V5C registration document.

As soon as your application is accepted, you can start using your cherished plate.

  • What are the rules for purchasing cherished number plates?

The rules around purchasing a cherished number plate are generally straightforward. The only rule you need to remember is that a cherished plate cannot be used to make a vehicle appear younger than it is.

Pre-internet, some individuals would use cherished plates in an attempt to make their vehicles seem newer and more expensive. Today, most cherished plates are bought to give a vehicle a classic, vintage look. If this is the case for you, the only thing you need to remember is to correctly fill in the transfer form.

  • Why are cherished plates so expensive and how do they undergo valuation?

A key factor driving the high cost of cherished number plates is their exclusivity. Pre-1963, when stricter regulations were introduced, drivers enjoyed far more freedom in plate personalisation. This means the dateless plates that survive today come in a wider array of unique spellings and meaningful combinations (making them more valuable as a result). These plates are also now increasingly rare — many cherished plates have not endured the past six decades, further enhancing their value.

The value of a cherished plate is determined by several factors, including:

    • Rarity
    • Age
    • Popularity
    • Numbers (some numbers have more value, such as 18 or 21)
    • Supply or similar plates
    • Match quality (how well the plate represents a name or word)

  • How can owning a cherished number plate impact the value of a vehicle?

The market for cherished plates has only increased over the years, with the most rare and desirable fetching upwards of £300,000. Coupling a rare cherished plate with a classic vintage car can most definitely increase the value of the vehicle. After all, cherished plates are more than just a way to identify your car — they’re a piece of history, a symbol of prestige, and ultimately a smart investment. These unique registrations tell a story of exclusivity and value and can bump up the value of your vehicle.
